As a web developer, IE6 has become an irritation, to put it nicely. It’s well documented that Microsoft’s browser was incapable of displaying standards compliant code and had its own way of interpreting the standards set by the W3C. There’s even Facebook groups dedicated to bringing down this old browser version which was released as part of Windows XP.

Well now it looks as though Microsoft is doing something about all those people still using IE6, by displaying an advert for IE8 on their Bing decision engine. An article by Stuart Johnston on Datamation describes the ad as “tiny” so we may not see a huge take up. But things are looking positive with IE6 losing market share all the time.

I’d love to be able to say that I’m no longer supporting IE6 users when I’m developing a website, but it’s just not possible at the moment with the number of people still using the browser. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel though and I will continue to dream of the day when all browsers behave as they should.
